Bike-EU reports that e-bike systems maker Bosch has acquired Magura's remaining 50% stake in its e-bike parts subsidiary, giving it full control of the popular e-bike brake OEM. Bosch has owned a 50% stake in the company since 2019, when it was formed as a new joint venture between the two parent companies. Cycling Electric reports the company will continue to operate independently, as a wholly owned subsidiary. A spokesperson for Bosch said the deal represents the company's commitment to supporting its network of dealers.

Will Also, Rivian's $305m bet on e-bikes, pay dividends?
Jack Newsham at Business Insider takes the Also TM-B for a test spin. Rivian's e-bike is turning heads, and not only because of its unique looks. Backed by $305m fundraising, Also represents the first serious entry by a car maker into the rapidly growing electric bike market, and it seems designed to bring smart-car features from EVs into the world of urban cycling.
It remains to be seen, however, if more smart features and proprietary components are really what consumers want out of an e-bike. Newsham concludes by noting that while the TM-B is a thrilling and fun experience, it wasn't different enough from his trusty Fuji road bike to instantly convert him. On the other hand, its innovative suite of features and accessible user experience might be just the thing to attract non-cyclists to actually make the switch.

To Curb Speeding, Turn to the Traffic Light: Citylab
At Bloomberg Citylab, David Zipper explains how traffic light timing can be an effective safety intervention. Why should that be exciting? Because officials have observed that these interventions often fly under the radar. Cheaper and easier to implement than measures like radar signs, speed humps and lane reductions, variations in light programming can nonetheless have a profound effect on drivers behavior. One traffic signal strategy, called "rest in red," sets red as the default state of a traffic light in all directions, changing to green only when a car approaches and stops, which has proven effective at reducing speeding at crash-prone intersections.
Milestone as one million vehicle miles replaced by Tern delivery e-bikes in New York City: Elektrek
E-bike delivery fleets in NYC have just crossed the collective million-mile mark. "E-cargo bike efficiency now mirrors that of traditional delivery vans," Elektrek reports, with "some fleets... hitting 360 deliveries per day, averaging more than 22 deliveries per hour." The fleets are made up of Tern HSD e-bikes and CARLA Cargo trailers, capable of carrying 300+ lbs at a time. Some individual bikes have even clocked over 30,000 miles on the road, reducing VMT and emissions over years of service.
Tern says their cargo rigs are an optimal choice for congested New York City, offering greater flexibility than trucks and vans, at 1/6th of the annual cost per fleet vehicle. And now, they can point to a real world track record of reliability as business machines.

What's driving the spike in e-bike injuries?
Velo Magazine looks at rising trends in E-bike injuries, and questions whether spikes are driven by pedal assist electric bicycles, or e-motos, which don't conform to standard E-bike power or speed limits. From their report:
"The solution to cutting e-bike injuries isn’t to ban them or impose onerous restrictions on legitimate electric bicycles. It’s holding e-moto manufacturers accountable for the motor vehicles they produce, requiring honest marketing, and giving federal agencies the authority and resources to enforce existing laws.
Communities, parents, and riders deserve clarity. They deserve to know what they’re buying, what rules apply, and what risks they face. They deserve federal regulation that protects the future of electric bicycle access while addressing the genuine safety crisis created by e-motos."
Some say the answer to the e-bike safety question is to hold manufacturers that market e-motos as "e-bikes" accountable with new federal rules.

Biking the bottom of Lake Erie
Bicycles are often in the news, but they are rarely in the weather report. From Toledo, Ohio, Meteorologist Ryan Wichman of station WTOL11 in Toledo, OH shares this incredible picture of a local youth biking on the bottom of Lake Erie during a seiche (a large standing wave on the lake), just before Thanksgiving.
Surprise! North America is the top global market for Folding Bikes
That's according to Deep Market Insights, whose new market report pegs North American folding bike share at 35-40% for 2024. While conventional folders still dominate, with nearly 75% of global revenue, e-folders are projected to outpace all other segments by 2030. That's not hard to imagine, with Elektrek reporting earlier this year that folding ebikes are "the best-selling e-bike category in the US."
